This dessert is the taste of summer. And the best part? I accidentally ran into this tasty homemade goodness! What started as a forgotten item on the grocery list to get an angel food cake mix, and the local rural Dollar General did not carry any, I went back to the drawing board to start with a homemade angel food cake and let me tell you, it did NOT disappoint.
I did not make any changes to the cake recipe. I did not have a tube pan and used a uncreased glass bread loaf pan and it turned out perfect!

And here is what I made for the toppings...
As many fresh strawberries as you want, probably the more the merrier :) I like to make it a little fancy and slice them into circles. Put in a bowl and sprinkle with some sugar so they make some juice to soak into the cake until serving.
Homemade whipped cream:
1 1/2 C heavy whipping cream
1/8 C powdered sugar
2 T vanilla ( you can do less, but love a strong vanilla flavor)
Mix in a bowl with a handheld beater until stiff peaks form takes about 2-3 minutes or so. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
Then serve the cake! I sliced the cake into thin slices and layered: cake * strawberries * whipped cream * repeat* and enjoy!
